PANAMIN, also known as Panamin or Panamin Foundation, is a non-stock, non-profit organization created to protect the interests of cultural minorities in the Philippines. PANAMIN is led and primarily funded by Manuel Elizalde, Jr., the eldest son of a Filipino millionaire, but sometimes by the Philippine government under President Ferdinand Marcos. Founded in 1968, the group disbanded in 1983 after Elizalde fled the Philippines. Elizalde is considered a close confidant of Marcos. [2][3]
PANAMIN is accused of representing the interests of economic enterprises aimed at exploiting natural resources on ancestral lands. [4] The group forced thousands of indigenous people into "strategic villages", allegedly to protect them from armed conflict. However, a Human Rights Watch report said the relocation was aimed at enabling logging and mining operations in Elizalde. [3] PANAMIN also recruits indigenous people into paramilitary organizations that divide and harass indigenous communities. [5]
Notably, Charles Lindbergh served on the board of PANAMIN and, together with Elizalde, visited many indigenous peoples of the Philippines.
