Imatinib is a derivative of 2-phenylaminopyrimidine (CH2SO3H). Studies in cell cultures of CML patients have shown that Imatinib suppresses the growth of Ph-positive cells, with almost no effect on Ph-negative cells. Imatinib comes under the brand name Gleevec. The mechanism of the action of Imatinib that blocks the activity of ABL-tyrosine kinase is associated with the incorporation of the drug molecule into the place in the ABL-tyrosine kinase molecule - the ATP pocket, where ATP is usually embedded.
