Veterinary drugs approved illegally for human use include Boldenone (Equipoise), Ketamine, Stanozolol (Winstrol), and Trenbolone (Finajet). Veterinary products containing anabolic steroids are intended for administration via implants to cattle or other non-human species and are approved by FDA CVM, but are excluded from all schedules. 7,8
Ketamine hydrochloride, commonly known as "special k" or "k", is a general anesthetic for humans and animals. Ketamine produces effects similar to phencyclidine (PCP or "angel dust"). Street-sold ketamine comes from diverted legal supplies, mainly veterinary clinics. It is similar in appearance to pharmaceutical-grade cocaine and is smoked, placed in alcoholic beverages, or combined with marijuana. The incidence of ketamine abuse is increasing. Concerns about the growing illicit market and abuse epidemic, as well as the possible long-term harmful effects of steroid use, led Congress to place anabolic steroids on Schedule III of the CSA in 1991. The CSA defines anabolic steroids as any drug or hormonal substance chemically and pharmacologically related to testosterone (except estrogens, progestins, and corticosteroids) that promote muscle growth. Most illegal anabolic steroids are sold in gyms, competitions, and through mail-in businesses. In most cases, these substances are smuggled into the United States. Substances commonly found on the illicit market include Boldenone (Equipoise), Fluoxymesterone (Halotestin), Dianabol, Dianabol, Methyltestosterone, Nandrolone (Durabolin, Deca-Durabolin), Oxandrolone (Anavar) , Oxymetholone (Anadrol), Stanozolol (Winstrol), Testosterone, and Trenbolone (Finajet). Physical side effects include increased blood pressure and cholesterol levels, severe acne, premature hair loss, decreased sexual function and shrinking testicles. In men, abnormal breast development (gynecomastia) may occur. In women, anabolic steroids have a virilizing effect, resulting in more body hair, a deeper voice, smaller breasts, and fewer menstrual cycles. Some of these effects are irreversible. In adolescents, misuse of these drugs may prevent bone lengthening prematurely, leading to stunted growth
