Tim Whitehouse, executive director of Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, which works on issues of environmental ethics and scientific integrity, said this latest move by the EPA is only a small step in the fight to end PFAS pollution.

"Epa's action is too little, too late," Whitehouse said. "This administration and previous administrations have worked hard not to upset chemical companies and communities."

While the Superfund designation means certain sites may be able to be cleaned up using Superfund money and the Superfund name, that is still several years away, Whitehouse said.

"Some communities may benefit from the proposed rule, but it doesn't solve the problem, which is EPA's refusal to set standards for the management of PFOS waste," Whitehouse said. Since they are always chemical, there is no safe way to dispose of them.
