These ultrasonic waves travel through the air, and when they encounter the water surface, they get partially reflected back to the transducer.

The microprocessor unit, which is connected to the transducer, measures the time it takes for the ultrasonic waves to travel to the water surface and return. Using the speed of sound in air as a constant (since the distance in air is known), the sensor calculates the time-of-flight of the ultrasonic waves and then derives the distance to the water surface.

Once the distance to the water surface is determined, the sensor can easily calculate the water level by subtracting this distance from the total height of the tank or container. The resulting water level information is then typically displayed on a screen or transmitted to other systems for monitoring and control purposes.

Ultrasonic water level sensors are preferred in various applications due to their non-contact measurement capability, which means they do not physically touch the water, reducing the risk of contamination and minimizing maintenance requirements. They are also relatively immune to environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and air pressure changes, making them reliable and suitable for a wide range of water level measurement tasks.
