History Of Chausath Yogini Temple, Murena

Chausath Yogini Temple is located at Mitawali village, in Murena district near Gwalior city. It is said to have been built from 1055 to 1075 by King Devapala from Kachchhapaghata and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The diameter of this circular monument is around 340 feet and it is divided into 64 chambers covered with slabs of stones. The drainage system of this monument is worth noticing allowing rainwater to be stored which shows the ingenuity of forefathers in the field of architecture.

The design of this monument inspired Sir Edwin Lutyens who used it while making parliament, in other words, it is known as a blueprint of parliament. It has a lot of similarities in architecture with Parliament House, like pillars, circular design, central chamber, and the color of the stone.

Despite having a lot of similarities in both monuments, no authentic information has been found that Sir Edwin Lutyens visited this place, it may be a mere coincidence.
